About the Journal
Mission Statement
The mission of the Journal of Laboratory Animal Science (JLAS) is to disseminate high-quality, peer-reviewed information that expands biomedical knowledge and promotes human and animal health through the study of laboratory animal diseases, disease diagnostic techniques, animal models of disease, basic biological mechanisms related to disease in humans and animals, and information on animal biology, technology, facility operations, and management.
Guidelines for Authors
1. Aims and Scope
The Journal of Laboratory Animal Science (JLAS) is the official journal of the Laboratory Animal Scientists’ Association (LASA), India and is published biannually in English. The journal publishes:
- Original articles
- Case reports
- Brief communications
- Letters to the editor
- Review articles
Topics include:
- Use of animals in biomedical and veterinary research.
- Testing and evaluation of toxicity of agrochemicals, pesticides, and other compounds.
- Facility design, environmental enrichment, laboratory animal care and nutrition, pain management, genetics, and health monitoring.
- Diagnostics, transgenic animals, new disease models, and novel efficacy testing methods.
- Regulations and guidelines on animal welfare, education, training, and facility management.
2. Editorial Policy
Peer Review
All contributions are reviewed by independent referees, and the Editorial Board reserves the final decision on acceptance or rejection of a manuscript.
Ethical Approval and Other Considerations
- All research articles must be approved by the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC).
- Manuscripts must conform to accepted principles of animal usage in biomedical research.
- Housing conditions, management procedures, and environmental conditions must be clearly mentioned.
- Use standard international nomenclature for laboratory animals, genes, and microbes.
- Provide details of animal sources, breeding methods, and IAEC/CCSEA approval dates.
Permissions and Copyright
- Written consent must be obtained for previously published material.
- Accepted manuscripts require copyright assignment to JLAS.
Manuscript Review and Status
- Submissions are screened for compliance with author guidelines before peer review.
- Manuscripts typically undergo review by three experienced reviewers.
3. Types of Articles
Review Articles
- Appraise and discuss current developments in the field.
- Length: Up to 5,500 words with 75 references.
Original Articles
- Present original or incremental research.
- Length: Up to 4,500 words, with sections for Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, and References.
Short Reports
- Include technical notes, case reports, or preliminary communications.
- Length: Up to 1,500 words, with no more than two figures or tables.
Letters to the Editor
- Focus on scientific or ethical content of the journal.
4. How to Submit a Manuscript
- Manuscripts must be in English and meet high grammatical standards.
- Submissions should be made online and prepared according to the guidelines below.
5. How to Prepare a Manuscript
Formatting
- Use double-spaced text in Times New Roman, font size 12.
- Headings and subheadings should be in bold.
Title Page
- Include manuscript title, author names, affiliations, and corresponding author details.
- The short title should be no more than six words.
Abstract
- Unstructured, up to 250 words (200 words for Short Reports).
- Include up to five keywords.
Body
- Use coded or nonproprietary language.
- Cite proprietary names only in Materials and Methods.
- Define abbreviations at first use and limit novel abbreviations.
Sections
- Introduction: Brief rationale and background.
- Materials and Methods: Detailed descriptions of animals, procedures, and statistical methods.
- Results: Summarize data; avoid repeating all information from figures/tables.
- Discussion: Include key findings, study limitations, and future research directions.
Tables and Figures
- Tables: Use the Table feature in word processors. Each table should have a concise legend.
- Figures: Number in sequence and include legends. Follow digital format guidelines for resolution and file types.
References
- Use APA format. Refer to online tools like Mendeley, Scribbr, or MyBib for assistance.
Acknowledgments
- Acknowledge contributions from funding, technical assistance, and other sources.
Conflict of Interest Statement
- Include at the end of the manuscript.
Abbreviations
- Use current abbreviations and follow nomenclature standards.
Units
- Use SI units for measurements.
Proofs and e-prints
- Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author as a PDF for review and prompt return.
Prohibition of Dual Submission
- Authors must confirm no dual submissions in the cover letter. Violations may lead to immediate withdrawal.
Appeals and Complaints
- Appeals can be made to the Editor-in-Chief within seven days of a decision if substantial misinterpretation is suspected.
