Abstract

The Patient, Male, 8 years of age, came to my clinic with his parents on 31.12.13. The Patient presented with complete deformation of nails of both upper and lower extremities since one and half years. He also suffered from recurrent cough and cold since childhood. His parents that they suddenly observed a blackish longitudinal elevated line across his one or two nails which gradually became thick and spread. Over a span of few months entire nails became deformed. Nail beds became rough and blackish. Now there is no existence of nails. After clinical examination the case was diagnosed as “Onichomycosis”. It is a fungal infection of the nail, usually caused by a dermatophyte (Candida Albicans). Onichomycosis occurs when fungus forms beneath the nails. The condition can develop as a result of poor foot hygiene, continuous exposure to moist environments, wearing synthetic socks, accumulation of sweat in shoes, imbalanced pH levels of the skin, a compromised immune system, and conditions like diabetes that constricts blood flow. Upon infection, Onichomycosis will cause the nail to thicken, discolor, and eventually crumble into pieces.
