About the Society

Laboratory Animal Scientists' Association (LASA) is a national organization dedicated to advancing laboratory animal science by promoting the ethical care and use of laboratory animals in biomedical and veterinary research.

The association was established by a group of dedicated scientists and laboratory animal service personnel working in various capacities in animal houses of Government and Private Institutions across the country.

Aims of the Association

  • To promote and coordinate the development of laboratory animal science throughout the country.
  • To promote quality standards and monitoring of laboratory animals.
  • To collect and disseminate scientific information on laboratory animals.
  • To promote nationwide harmonization in the care and use of laboratory animals.
  • To promote humane use of animals in research through ethical principles and scientific responsibility.
  • To encourage researchers to follow the 3R principles (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) proposed by Russell and Burch.

Objectives of the Association

  • Provide a platform for scientists working with laboratory animals to exchange and share knowledge on animal care and use.
  • Promote awareness of research animal care and ethical use among animal scientists.
  • Provide updates and information related to zoonotic diseases.
  • Generate trained human resources for laboratory animal facilities through improved communication and resources.
  • Publish newsletters and journals to disseminate the latest advances in laboratory animal science.
  • Provide advisory and informational support to government agencies and other organizations on laboratory animal management, ethics, zoonoses, and health.
  • Encourage professional courses and career development in laboratory animal science.
  • Focus on key areas including Animal Management, Animal Health, Genetic Monitoring, Animal Data Generation, and Alternatives to Animal Experiments.
  • Promote the concept of the 4Rs (Reduction, Replacement, Refinement and Rehabilitation).
  • Maintain high standards of professional competence and promote continuous improvement of knowledge.
  • Collaborate with other professional organizations on matters of mutual interest.
  • Support research aimed at improving animal care and health.
  • Recognize and encourage outstanding achievements of scientists and keep members informed about developments in the field.
  • Enhance professional knowledge through seminars, lectures, conferences and training programs.
