Abstract

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most common and indispensable vegetable cum condiment crops grown for local consumption, export, and processing. Among the different methods of irrigation, drip irrigation is the most important one, originally developed as a sub-irrigation system. India is the second-largest producer of onion after China, with about 10.03 lakh hectares under cultivation, producing 145.61 lakh tonnes of bulbs, and with a productivity of about 13.99 tonnes per hectare (Anonymous, 2011). In Rajasthan, the total area of onion cultivation is about 73,456 hectares, with a production of 664,215 tonnes and a productivity of 9,042 kg per hectare (Anonymous, 2011; Thimmaiah, 1989; Singh et al., 2003; Krishnamurthy & Sharanappa, 2005; Mandloi et al., 2008; Hari et al., 2009). In Rajasthan, the area under drip irrigation is 30,300 hectares (Alam & Kumar, 2007).
